Click Trigger

A popup that opens only when the visitor clicks a specific button, link, or image, so the ask is started by the visitor rather than by a timer or scroll position.

A click trigger ties the popup to an element on the page. A button that says "Get the checklist" or a text link reading "Send me the template" opens the form on demand. Nothing appears unless the visitor asks for it, which is why click-triggered popups tend to convert best per view of any trigger type and draw the fewest complaints.

The pattern is sometimes called a two-step opt-in: step one is the click, which signals intent, and step two is the form. Because the visitor has already acted, they are far more likely to finish than someone who was interrupted. It is the standard delivery mechanism for content upgrades and for demo or contact requests inside long pages.

The limitation is reach. Only visitors who notice and click the element ever see the popup, so it captures fewer total leads than a scroll or exit trigger on the same page. Combine them: click triggers on the inline calls to action, plus an exit-intent popup as the safety net for people who never clicked. Make the element look clickable and say what opens, so nothing is a surprise.
